One of the most recognized signs in the world, the Hollywood Sign atop Mount Lee was originally constructed by a developer in1923. It read “Hollywoodland” to advertise a hillside subdivision in Beachwood Canyon. The original stone gates and the “Hollywoodland” real estate office are still present in Beachwood Canyon. The sign was maintained by a caretaker who lived in a cabin behind the first L until 1939. The “LAND” part of the sign was taken down in 1945 when the area was deeded to the city. The sign was rebuilt in 1980’s to become a permanent landmark for the movie industry and the town of Hollywood.
