The J. Byer Group provides geotechnical consulting services, specializing in geotechnical engineering and engineering geology. A geotechnical engineer analyzes the behavior of earth materials under stress or loading with respect to foundation design and slope stability. The engineering geologist applies knowledge of geology to the performance of engineered projects. Often, both disciplines are required to analyze the safety and stability of projects.

The principals of the firm, John W. Byer and Robert I. Zweigler, have over forty years combined experience in performing geotechnical explorations, and have been providing consulting services in California since 1971. During that period, over 8,000 projects have been analyzed. John W. Byer, the principal geologist, started his career in 1965. Robert I. Zweigler, the principal geotechnical engineer, is a registered civil engineer, geotechnical engineer, geologist, and engineering geologist.
